Part-time Work & Internship
Non-local students (EXCLUDING exchange and visiting students) studying in a full-time locally-accredited programme at the Bachelor’s level or above offered by CityUHK for at least one academic year may engage in:
- part-time on-campus employment offered by the University;
- summer job from 1 June to 31 August (both dates inclusive);
- study/curriculum-related internship (if eligible); and
- any other types of activities that are specified in their no objection letter(s) (NOL) issued by the Hong Kong Immigration Department.
Before taking up any internship, part-time employment or summer job, non-local students must obtain prior permission from the Director of Immigration of the Hong Kong Immigration Department. Visa/entry permit holders should always refer to the details stated in their NOLs.
Part-time On-campus Employment and Summer Jobs
The Hong Kong Immigration Department will issue a ‘no objection letter’ to eligible students upon approval of their student visa/entry permit application.
Your student visa/entry permit and the NOL for part-time on-campus employment and summer jobs will remain valid throughout the duration of your approved programme of study at the University.
Study/Curriculum-related Internship
Full-time students at the Bachelor’s level or above may accept a study/curriculum-related internship for up to one academic year, or one-third of the normal duration of the relevant full-time academic programme, whichever is shorter. A separate NOL on study/curriculum-related internship will be issued to an eligible applicant when the student visa/entry permit is granted.
The internship must take place while the student is formally registered at the University. Hence, do not take up an internship if your study at the University has finished.
Unlike the NOL for part-time on-campus employment and summer jobs, this NOL for internship is normally valid for one year only. If needed, batch renewal of NOL will be done by the University for eligible students.
Important Notes
The HKSAR Government periodically reviews the employment restrictions applicable to holders of student visa/entry permits. Student visa/entry permit holders should always refer to the terms and conditions in their valid NOL(s) and ensure full compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.
Should you switch to another study programme, approval must be obtained from the Immigration Department, and new NOL(s) (if applicable) will be issued.
If you wish to replace a lost or damaged NOL, please contact the Hong Kong Immigration Department for assistance.
