About Programme
Why BAS New Media?

The BAS major is a unique programme that fosters interdisciplinary enquiry, balances theoretical knowledge and practical skills in new media arts, connects technological and scientific concepts and methods to creative practices, offers signature courses in Arts Tech, and prepares students for jobs in new media arts and creative industries. This major is designed for students who want to explore the intersection of art, science, and technology, and to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the rapidly-evolving creative industries.

Our Target

Media creators are increasingly using scientific concepts in their work. Games, for instance, use ideas from physics, biology and mathematics. Multimedia artists are also learning to collaborate with scientists when producing their work. This ground-breaking major is a response to this cutting-edge trend in the creative world.

This major emphasises lateral thinking and understanding across professions to prepare graduates for an increasingly interdependent and integrated world. Students use technology as an artistic medium, generating learning in a progressive and interdisciplinary context that bridges art, science, technology and the humanities. The curriculum encourages creative and critical thinking in the domain of digital content, together with the successful expression of a socially engaged personal vision through various digital media formats. Graduates receive professional training in state-of-the-art facilities to prepare them for future careers in the use of art, science and technology in the creative industries, innovative education and cultural management.

This major is especially designed for students who are not afraid to break down the barriers between the arts and the sciences.

After completing the School requirements, students study the major core courses to acquire basic knowledge of the history and theory of media art and achieve basic competence in a range of creative media including photography, sound, video, programming, electronics and installation.

Students also take Art and Science Studio courses of their own choice. This set of courses is especially designed to help creative professionals to incorporate scientific concepts and methods in art making with an emphasis on scientific research/visualisation methods and the integration of art, science and culture.

Students are free to choose from a comprehensive list of elective courses from various areas such as animation, game, cinema and new media.

All students complete a Graduation Thesis/Project, which can be a creative art project. Optional internship programmes are also in place for students who want to gain professional experience before they graduate. Throughout their studies, students have regular exposure to world-class artists and creative media professionals who visit SCM as guests or artists-in-residence.

Students can also take free electives or minor(s) according to their personal or career interests to fulfil the credit requirement for graduation. A strong Student Advising Scheme is in place to provide essential guidance and mentoring to students as part of their study plan.

Graduates will be prepared to become creative artists and content providers for the games industry, animation, TV and digital media broadcasting, cinema, photography, web design, software development and the contemporary arts. They may also choose to join the quickly advancing interactive media industry connected to advertising, exhibition and trade shows, or the emerging field of computer imaging for the health and science professions. Summer Internship Programme

Many of our students are able to find summer internship, either by themselves or through our referral, in various industries. Below are some sharing from the students:

Gloria Andry Putri (Intern in HSBC)

Hi! My name is Gloria. In July 2022, I joined The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC) as an intern in Commercial Banking, specifically in Business Banking - Strategy and Innovation.

Job Nature

My daily tasks include data analysis to understand client behavior in our platform, research, and engaging with clients. One of the biggest projects I was assigned to support was the launch of the new platform called Business Go which allows me to communicate with different teams and divisions including marketing, IT, content, and many more. BDAN has prepared me with the essential skills including excel, SQL, and presentations which I could apply directly to the projects.

Achievement and Learnings

During the internship, I was able to connect with like-minded people, have a better understanding of the business, and applied what I have learnt in university. Not to mention, my team has taught me on how to present data in a more efficient way to align with business expectations. This internship allowed me to find my passion in the financial industry and decide to pursue a career in banking.

Philomena Wang (Intern in Sigtica Limited)

Hi, everyone! I’m Philomena, a current student majoring in Business Decision Analytics. In the summer of 2024, I had the opportunity to intern at Sigtica Limited, a start-up firm where I worked as a data analyst.

Job Nature

Sigtica Limited is a dynamic and fast-growing startup, and I was thrilled to secure a role as a data analyst. My solid background in programming and data analysis tools helped me stand out during the application process. Through this internship, I realized how valuable technical skills in machine learning and natural language processing are in today’s job market. My prior experience with programming languages and statistical analysis gave me the competitive edge needed to land this exciting opportunity.

Learning and Achievement

This internship marked a shift from my previous experiences, as it was more focused on computer science and model development. Although I initially encountered challenges adapting to the technical demands of the role, my perseverance and problem-solving skills enabled me to overcome these obstacles. I successfully built and fine-tuned a prediction model for Named Entity Recognition (NER), automating the extraction of key information from IPO documents. By leveraging the Transformer library, I developed a model that achieved an impressive F1 score of 95%, streamlining the process of analyzing large financial documents.

Throughout the internship, I gained invaluable experience working with different NLP platforms, including spaCy, Transformer, and ONNX. I was able to convert models between these platforms seamlessly, which enhanced my technical expertise. The data-related courses offered by DAO Department were particularly rewarding as they gave me a solid understanding of big data operations and statistics which is very important in the Internet industry.

Professional Qualification

Students are able to obtain internationally recognised professional qualifications including:

  • SAS Base Programmer Certification
  • SAS Advanced Programmer Certification
  • SAS Predictive Modeler Certification
  • The Financial Risk Manager (FRM)
Co-curricular Activities and Learning Support

Cheung Chiu Keung, Leo (Intern in Hang Seng Bank)

“You can’t put a limit on anything. The more you dream, the farther you get.” – Michael Phelps

I worked at Hang Seng Bank as Chief Administrative Office (CAO) intern under Operations, Services and Technology department. This 5-month internship experience broadens my horizons a lot.

What I learned from Hang Seng Bank that can’t find in textbooks or lectures, so it is a valuable and unique opportunity for me. Although I had felt terrifying and challenging to the projects, luckily my colleagues assisted me with no doubt. I am so glad that this internship broadened my horizons.

Internship program acts as a bridge to connect our career paths, no matter seeking your paths or adapting work pace. How much you gain depends on how much you pay, so my advice to all of you is not to question your abilities and push your limits. If you can dream it, you can do it!

Ma Wing Sin, Eunice (Intern in Esquel Group)

With the vision of making a difference in the world, Esquel cares a lot about the harmonious of environment and people, as well as a sustainable future worthy of appreciation by generations to come.

During my summer internship in Esquel, I was with Technical Development Centre and assigned with a project to promote a new printing technology within the company, which was 3D printing. To be honest, I knew nothing about 3D printing beforehand but I was glad to take this challenge. On the way of organising the 3D printing workshop to colleagues, I did lots of researches and kept myself familiar with this technology by trial and errors. Though I encountered quite a lot of difficulties during the preparation time, I learnt far more than I expected, including AutoCAD and event management skills.

Apart from the departmental duties, Esquel also provided summer interns an opportunity to have a business trip to Gaoming, one of their major factory plants. It was a valuable experience to know how a complete textile manufacturing process was. We even got a chance to assemble a t-shirt using sewing machine by ourselves. The trip gave me a bigger picture of Esquel’s operation beyond my department.

As an innovative textile firm, Esquel does place value on developing new technologies; not only for operations, but also colleagues’ personal development. I appreciate the vision, work atmosphere and more importantly, the teammates’ love there. I would say my last summer has definitely well spent in Esquel.

Lu Chun Yu, Jonathan (Intern in Deloitte)

Greetings! I am Jonathan, one of the many GOM buddies and it is the third month since I have been an Audit intern with Deloitte under their 4-month Spring Internship Program.

Life at Deloitte is thrilling. Working on a project basis, as opposed to a hierarchy structure, we get to meet new colleagues and new clients very often. It is not unusual that we have to face the CFOs and Directors by ourselves alone. As an intern, this has given me an invaluable opportunity to grasp in-depth knowledge and understanding of the different clients’ companies and the  industries in which they operate.

“How does Audit relate to your studies?”, you may ask. You may have heard this many times, but operations is everywhere, in our client’s businesses and even in Deloitte itself. The Audit work that we perform everyday requires us to thoroughly understand the way our clients do businesses so that we are able to detect risk of fraud or error and other anomalies. Deloitte, having a project based organizational structure with over 225,400 employees worldwide, also has a unique and efficient operations management practice that is very much worth learning.

There is no doubt that the professional services industry is an intense and rapidly changing environment where you have to be versatile in order to excel. Fortitude is also essential to endure the long working hours. With that being said, this is a place where hard-work pays off and where you can take in and learn a lot like a pool for a sponge.

About Programme
Why BA Creative Media?

The BACM major crosses the boundaries between different digital media arts practices and combines critical studies and creative practice. You will acquire both breadth learning and specialist training in media arts and study courses in photography, computational art, gaming and interactive media, sound, animation, film and media art installation.

Our Target

This major is an innovative programme that advocates inter-medial creative practices. The programme fuses art, culture and media technology, covering a wide range of subjects such as cinema, animation, photography, sound, installation, interactive media, video game and new media art. The curriculum places a strong focus on applied learning and integrative training of creativity and technology. Students are expected to develop professional competency and creative and critical thinking via hands-on learning and studio practice. This major is designed to train creative talents and practitioners who not only possess cultural sensibility but are also equipped with strong technological literacy, ready and adaptable for the cultural sphere, creative industry and media sector of the 21st century.

Entrance Requirements for Direct / Non-JUPAS Applicants

Entrance Requirements for Direct / Non-JUPAS Applicants

To be considered for admission, you must satisfy the General Entrance Requirements.

For senior-year (Advanced Standing II) admission, applicants are normally expected to have completed an Associate Degree/Higher Diploma in a relevant discipline with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of ≥3.0 or an equivalent overall mark, or a credit award.

Portfolio Submission

Applicants may be invited to attend an interview and/or other assessment processes so that the School of Creative Media (SCM) can gauge their creative potential. All direct applicants for SCM programmes (1040/1041/1042/1043/1044/1456A/1468A/1471A) are strongly encouraged to submit a portfolio of creative work via an online system to SCM. Details of the portfolio submission will be announced towards the end of 2025 via the School’s homepage at portfolio web page. Portfolio materials may include still photography, paintings/drawings, sculptures, musical compositions/performances, films/videos, software, multimedia productions, academic or creative writing, science projects or other forms of imaginative activity.

Consideration may be given to employment records, travel and other examples of life experience.

Curriculum Structure

After completing the common School requirements, students will study a group of major core courses that distinguish the BACM from the other two SCM majors. The core courses are Creative Media Studio II (cinematography and video post-production), Physical Computing and Tangible Media, Critical Theory and Socially Engaged Practices, Contemporary & New Media Art and Narrative Strategies and Aesthetics of Time-based Media for a variety of media contexts such as moving image, animation, experimental videography, documentary works, games, hypertextual environments and non-linear screen storytelling.

Beyond the School and major core requirements, students are free to take any elective courses from various areas such as animation, game, cinema and new media. These electives are meant to assist students in designing their own study paths based on their personal and professional objectives.

All students undertake a research-based Graduation Thesis/Project, which can be a creative art or critical writing project. Optional internships and overseas exchange programmes are also in place to provide students with networking experience before they graduate. Throughout their studies, students will have broad exposure to world-class artists and creative media professionals who visit SCM as guests or artists-in-residence on a regular basis.

Students can also take free electives or minor(s) according to their personal or career interests to fulfil the credit requirement for graduation. A strong Student Advising Scheme is in place to provide students with essential guidance and mentoring as part of their study plan.

For details, please visit the ‘Undergraduate Catalogue

Career Prospect

Graduates are qualified for a broad range of positions in the media, art, design, and film industries. We expect our graduates to obtain jobs in areas such as animation, film, television, video production, advertising, media art, internet and multimedia design, art-writing, art/media education, art/cultural management and exhibition design. The BACM curriculum also addresses the professional environment in which competent and socially engaged media art professionals are needed outside the media industry. A BACM graduate should be prepared for careers in artistic and cultural fields through good networking and the ability to contribute sound knowledge of multimedia and interdisciplinary creative thinking. The design of the curriculum also allows students to develop secondary areas of interest to broaden their employability and graduate-level higher education opportunities.

Student Exchange/Internship

Semester-long exchange study opportunities are offered worldwide. European destinations include the UK, Finland, Hungary, Czech Republic and Switzerland. Asian destinations include Mainland China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore. Students are also encouraged to join month-long overseas summer study tours of various themes, such as animation, creative computing, creative industries and enhancement on English proficiency.

The internship programme complements the SCM curricula by coordinating with companies and organizations in providing on-the-job training to students. A broad variety of local and overseas internship opportunities are available to prepare students for the exciting challenges of the fast-growing creative industries.
