Why INSPIRE?

The School of Energy and Environment (SEE) performs cutting-edge research and provides professional education in energy- and environment-related issues. The School is designed to tackle interactive relationship between energy and environment through the development of new scientific understanding and new technologies as well as the training of new professionals with broad knowledge in the areas of energy and environment.

We have a highly internationalised and experienced faculty from various countries specialising in atmospheric and climate science, biological science, chemistry, chemical engineering, energy economics, environmental engineering, environmental policy, mechanical engineering and materials science.  SEE endeavours to produce a new breed of engineers and professionals capable of solving energy and environmental problems.

We currently offer the following majors:

  • Bachelor of Engineering in Energy Science and Engineering
  • Bachelor of Engineering in Environmental Science and Engineering

Students start with a common year of foundation study. The content of our programmes covers a wide spectrum of areas, allowing students to explore knowledge in a number of environments. At the beginning of their studies, they develop a broad scientific foundation by studying courses in basic science, covering mathematics, computer science, physics, chemistry and biology before they are guided through an in-depth exploration of environment and energy issues.

At the end of Year 1, INSPIRE students can then decide their academic and research interests, and be allocated their preferred major without any selection criteria set for majors allocation.

The proposed INSPIRE stream offers a comprehensive education in energy and environmental engineering through enhanced overseas study, research engagement, industry placements, mentorship support and entrepreneurial training. It prepares students for (a) success in the field and (b) contribution to sustainable development, with the key features of the INSPIRE stream as summarized below:

  • Overseas placement / research opportunities and overseas exchange study are guaranteed for students to enhance their global perspective.

  • Students will participate in a mentorship programme that connects them with experienced professionals, offering guidance and industry insights to support their personal and professional development.

  • To embark on an entrepreneur journey, training workshops on entrepreneurship will be provided.

  • Scholarship awards will be provided for students taking part in overseas academic/research experiences at top universities.

Mission of the School

  • Advancing research and development, fostering knowledge transfer in targeted themes of benefit to societal needs in energy, environment, and sustainability;

  • Preparing leaders and practitioners to address environmental and energy needs in a rapidly decarbonizing world and build a sustainable future;

  • Maintaining a collaborative and supportive atmosphere for students, faculty, alumni and other stakeholders in advancing our interdisciplinary research and educational objectives.

Selection Process

Academic Score:
Applicants are shortlisted for admission interviews based on the Academic Score (70%) which focuses on the results of the pre-requisite subjects (viz. English, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry) and Casper score (30%). Students with the highest scores will be granted an MMI interview according to the interview quota.

Interview:
Shortlisted applicants are invited for an multiple mini interview. The MMI is intended to assess the applicants’ communication and personal attributes in response to written scenarios. The scenarios reflect some of the common challenges that a veterinary student could face during their studies or pre-clinical or clinical EMS, and applicants do not need prior veterinary-specific knowledge in order to score well in an MMI.

Applicants will be assessed on 8 scenarios. For each scenario, interviewees will have 8 minutes total to review, interpret, and discuss the scenario with a rater. Interviewees will be given 2 minutes to read the scenario, and a total of 6 minutes for discussion of the scenario with the rater.

Curriculum Strucutre

The BVM is a six-year programme jointly developed with our partner, the College of Veterinary Medicine of Cornell University. It is designed to train professionally competent veterinarians in accordance with the international accreditation standards of the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council (AVBC) and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). Upon graduation, students will have fulfilled the Day One Competences of the AVBC, RCVS and OIE and will be confident and competent to practice.

The first two years of the programme focus on biomedical and pre-clinical disciplines that will equip students with the knowledge and understanding required to embark on the para-clinical and clinical curriculum taught in Years Three to Six of the BVM.

During Years One and Two, students will become confident in understanding and assessing the normal behaviour of a range of different species and in handling them for health assessments and clinical examinations. Years Three and Four incorporate problem-based learning to deliver key para-clinical courses, including the Animal Body, Function and Dysfunction and Host, Agent and Defence. In Years Five and Six, students learn about diseases and preventive health care of a wide range of animal species, apply evidence-based medicine skills to conduct research and apply and practise their clinical skills in a variety of different settings, e.g., clinical practices as well as abattoirs, laboratories, or government veterinary services.

The six-year curriculum emphasises both clinical practice and the science that underlies it, ensuring that BVM students develop into well-rounded veterinarians omnicompetent to provide veterinary care to multiple animal species, including companion animals (cats, dogs, horses), exotics and wildlife, marine and freshwater species and livestock.

The four BVM themes, comprising animal welfare, aquatic animal health, emerging infectious diseases, and food safety, are introduced from Day 1 of the BVM programme.

The completion of some curriculum components may require students to spend time at facilities outside of Hong Kong, including mainland China.

For more information about the BVM (including more details about courses and workload), click here or visit the BVM website.

Flagship Scholarship

As the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVM) undergraduate degree programme is one of the Flagship Programmes offered by CityUHK, the ten highest-ranking local JUPAS and direct students admitted to the BVM programme each year will be awarded the Flagship Scholarship.

The Flagship Scholarship goes towards covering tuition fees and hall fees, guarantees a berth in the Halls of Residence and includes a one-off special sponsorship for one exchange placement at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University, which is ranked 3rd in QS World University Rankings for Veterinary Science 2024, in addition to the compulsory Cornell Extra-mural Studies (EMS) programme already embedded in the BVM programme.

The following placements at Cornell are offered depending on availability:

  • a place in the Veterinary Investigator Program (VIP) , a 10-week summer programme designed to provide veterinary students with rigorous and rewarding exposure to biomedical research at the highest level of inquiry and to motivate students to pursue the study of research problems that are relevant to veterinary medicine.
  • a place in the Leadership Program for Veterinary Students, a summer research experience for veterinary students who seek to broadly influence the veterinary profession through a science-based career.
  • a place in the Summer Dairy Institute Program, a concentrated 6-week course of the highest quality to a select group of professionals whose career objective is to enhance the well-being of dairy cattle such that they contribute to efficient, profitable, and environmentally sound production of safe food.
  • a Clinical EMS placement of four weeks duration after completion of Year 5 or during Year 6 only.

Based on the student's HKDSE scores, they will be offered either a full or half scholarship. The scholarship will be automatically renewed annually throughout the normal duration of the programme, on the condition that the student continues their study in the BVM programme by the end of Semester B each year.

For more information about this and other scholarships, go to CityUHK Scholarships for Hong Kong Talents - City University of Hong Kong.

Summer Internship Programme

Many of our students are able to find summer internship, either by themselves or through our referral, in various industries. Internship provides them an opportunity to gain practical experience and to enhance personal growth. We have received positive feedbacks from many large corporations regarding the performance of our students in the internships. Below are some of the companies or organizations in which our students worked under the internship programme:

Student sharing

Cheung Chiu Keung, Leo (Intern in Hang Seng Bank)

“You can’t put a limit on anything. The more you dream, the farther you get.” – Michael Phelps

I worked at Hang Seng Bank as Chief Administrative Office (CAO) intern under Operations, Services and Technology department. This 5-month internship experience broadens my horizons a lot.

What I learned from Hang Seng Bank that can’t find in textbooks or lectures, so it is a valuable and unique opportunity for me. Although I had felt terrifying and challenging to the projects, luckily my colleagues assisted me with no doubt. I am so glad that this internship broadened my horizons.

Internship program acts as a bridge to connect our career paths, no matter seeking your paths or adapting work pace. How much you gain depends on how much you pay, so my advice to all of you is not to question your abilities and push your limits. If you can dream it, you can do it!

Ma Wing Sin, Eunice (Intern in Esquel Group)

With the vision of making a difference in the world, Esquel cares a lot about the harmonious of environment and people, as well as a sustainable future worthy of appreciation by generations to come.

During my summer internship in Esquel, I was with Technical Development Centre and assigned with a project to promote a new printing technology within the company, which was 3D printing. To be honest, I knew nothing about 3D printing beforehand but I was glad to take this challenge. On the way of organising the 3D printing workshop to colleagues, I did lots of researches and kept myself familiar with this technology by trial and errors. Though I encountered quite a lot of difficulties during the preparation time, I learnt far more than I expected, including AutoCAD and event management skills.

Apart from the departmental duties, Esquel also provided summer interns an opportunity to have a business trip to Gaoming, one of their major factory plants. It was a valuable experience to know how a complete textile manufacturing process was. We even got a chance to assemble a t-shirt using sewing machine by ourselves. The trip gave me a bigger picture of Esquel’s operation beyond my department.

As an innovative textile firm, Esquel does place value on developing new technologies; not only for operations, but also colleagues’ personal development. I appreciate the vision, work atmosphere and more importantly, the teammates’ love there. I would say my last summer has definitely well spent in Esquel.

Lu Chun Yu, Jonathan (Intern in Deloitte)

Greetings! I am Jonathan, one of the many GOM buddies and it is the third month since I have been an Audit intern with Deloitte under their 4-month Spring Internship Program.

Life at Deloitte is thrilling. Working on a project basis, as opposed to a hierarchy structure, we get to meet new colleagues and new clients very often. It is not unusual that we have to face the CFOs and Directors by ourselves alone. As an intern, this has given me an invaluable opportunity to grasp in-depth knowledge and understanding of the different clients’ companies and the  industries in which they operate.

“How does Audit relate to your studies?”, you may ask. You may have heard this many times, but operations is everywhere, in our client’s businesses and even in Deloitte itself. The Audit work that we perform everyday requires us to thoroughly understand the way our clients do businesses so that we are able to detect risk of fraud or error and other anomalies. Deloitte, having a project based organizational structure with over 225,400 employees worldwide, also has a unique and efficient operations management practice that is very much worth learning.

There is no doubt that the professional services industry is an intense and rapidly changing environment where you have to be versatile in order to excel. Fortitude is also essential to endure the long working hours. With that being said, this is a place where hard-work pays off and where you can take in and learn a lot like a pool for a sponge.

Co-curricular Activities and Learning Support

Overseas Summer Programmes

Students may participate in English immersion courses, which include components such as volunteer placements, homestays and cultural activities in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the USA. Service Learning participants also provide voluntary services in less developed areas such as the Philippines, Thailand, Mongolia, Sri Lanka and Laos.

Young Scholars Programme

 To nurture BBA students to become outstanding future leaders in the region/world, our Young Scholars Programme offers the following:

  • overseas exposure during semester breaks, including study trips to renowned companies and universities;
  • internship placements in multinational companies to be arranged locally or overseas;
  • networking with top business students admitted locally and overseas;
  • professional mentorships provided by professors and professional practitioners; and
  • cultivation of social responsibility through community services and voluntary work.

Operations Management Project

Operations Management Project offers a unique opportunity for the Global Operations Management students to participate in real business projects and to apply what they have learned in other GOM courses in solving business problems. Student teams will work under faculty supervision to solve operations management related problems and identify improvement opportunities for both service and manufacturing businesses. They will also gain practical experience in planning and executing a real business project.

My daily tasks include data analysis to understand client behavior in our platform, research, and engaging with clients. One of the biggest projects I was assigned to support was the launch of the new platform called Business Go which allows me to communicate with different teams and divisions including marketing, IT, content, and many more. BDAN has prepared me with the essential skills including excel, SQL, and presentations which I could apply directly to the projects.

Achievement and Learnings

During the internship, I was able to connect with like-minded people, have a better understanding of the business, and applied what I have learnt in university. Not to mention, my team has taught me on how to present data in a more efficient way to align with business expectations. This internship allowed me to find my passion in the financial industry and decide to pursue a career in banking.

Philomena Wang (Intern in Sigtica Limited)

Hi, everyone! I’m Philomena, a current student majoring in Business Decision Analytics. In the summer of 2024, I had the opportunity to intern at Sigtica Limited, a start-up firm where I worked as a data analyst.

Job Nature

Sigtica Limited is a dynamic and fast-growing startup, and I was thrilled to secure a role as a data analyst. My solid background in programming and data analysis tools helped me stand out during the application process. Through this internship, I realized how valuable technical skills in machine learning and natural language processing are in today’s job market. My prior experience with programming languages and statistical analysis gave me the competitive edge needed to land this exciting opportunity.

Learning and Achievement

This internship marked a shift from my previous experiences, as it was more focused on computer science and model development. Although I initially encountered challenges adapting to the technical demands of the role, my perseverance and problem-solving skills enabled me to overcome these obstacles. I successfully built and fine-tuned a prediction model for Named Entity Recognition (NER), automating the extraction of key information from IPO documents. By leveraging the Transformer library, I developed a model that achieved an impressive F1 score of 95%, streamlining the process of analyzing large financial documents.

Throughout the internship, I gained invaluable experience working with different NLP platforms, including spaCy, Transformer, and ONNX. I was able to convert models between these platforms seamlessly, which enhanced my technical expertise. The data-related courses offered by DAO Department were particularly rewarding as they gave me a solid understanding of big data operations and statistics which is very important in the Internet industry.
