The Bachelor of Science in Environment and Sustainable Business is a four-year undergraduate programme that is jointly offered by the School of Energy and Environment (SEE) and the College of Business (CB). The programme is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and practices of sustainable business and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), and their integration in the business world.

By the end of the programme, students will have a comprehensive understanding of sustainable business and ESG, and be able to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios. They will also have a solid foundation in the science behind non-financial disclosures, and be familiar with the latest trends and technologies in sustainable energy and other fields in support of investment decision-making for sustainable finance.

The programme will be taught through a combination of lectures, case studies, and interactive discussions, and will feature experiential learning and industry connection via experts sharing (e.g., in guest lectures) from practitioners of leading organizations in Hong Kong. Students will have the opportunity to engage with real-world sustainable business/finance projects and develop practical skills in sustainability assessment, ESG integration, and impact investing. Students will also have a comprehensive understanding of sustainability in practice and ESG challenges and opportunities, and be prepared to pursue careers in this rapidly growing field.

The rationale for starting a new 4-year undergraduate programme in Environment and Sustainable Business is to meet the growing demand for professionals who can integrate ESG considerations into business, finance, and investment decisions. This demand is driven by the recognition that ESG factors are critical to long-term financial performance, and is reflected in the increasing popularity of sustainable investing and the growth of the sustainable finance industry. As the demand for professionals with expertise in environmental engineering, green finance, and Environment Social Governance (ESG) continues to rise, it has become increasingly apparent that there is a shortage of local financial professionals with expertise in ESG, as noted in the Chief Executive’s 2022 Policy Address.  Given Hong Kong’s strength as an international financial centre, it is imperative to further establish its status as a preferred ESG investment hub. Investors will likely shift their priority to companies with high ESG performance and commitment towards the carbon neutrality target. Moreover, areas like green finance and carbon emission trading are gaining importance in the financial field.

In response to the aforesaid developments, the School of Energy and Environment is proud to offer, in collaboration with the Department of Economics and Finance, a new double degree programme, the Bachelor of Engineering in Environmental Science and Engineering and Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance.

Through this double degree programme, students will receive a rigorous and comprehensive education in both environmental engineering and finance.  They will acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to address the challenges of sustainable finance, not just in Hong Kong but also in the global context.  By bridging the gap between these two fields, graduates of this programme will be well-prepared to tackle complex sustainability issues from a multidisciplinary perspective.

The Bachelor of Social Sciences in Social Work (BSSSW) programme is a helping professional degree that is accredited by the Social Workers Registration Board (SWRB) to promote human and community well-being, with a commitment to upholding human dignity, social equality, and diversity. The programme aims to enable students to evaluate and align personal values with the value base of the social work profession, and acquire knowledge, skills, understanding, and practice competence in the profession. Throughout the course of study, students will receive a solid foundation of training in social sciences and social work related to their professional practice. Upon graduation, you will have the competence to practice as a professionally qualified social worker in a variety of settings through which human services are delivered (e.g., social services agencies, schools, and health care institutions); work in the field of human resources (e.g., customer service and staff training); or pursue further studies in social work or related fields (e.g., psychology and education). You will also be eligible to apply for social work positions as a Registered Social Worker (RSW) in government and non-government organizations.

Graduates are qualified to register with the Social Workers Registration Board as Registered Social Workers (RSW).  The qualification is recognised by the majority of societies throughout the world.

BSocSc Psychology students are also eligible to apply for the Joint Bachelor’s Degree Program between City University of Hong Kong and Columbia University. Students study at CityUHK in year 1 and 2, and at Columbia University, New York, USA in year 3 and 4. Two bachelor’s degrees will be awarded, one awarded by CityUHK and one awarded by Columbia University.

Starting in 2026/27, high school applicants can directly apply for Year 1 entry to the prestigious Joint Bachelor’s Degree Programme offered by CityUHK and Columbia University. Graduates will earn degrees from both institutions. For JUPAS applicants, a separate application to Columbia University is required after submitting the JUPAS application.

Crime Science is an interdisciplinary approach for developing practical solutions to real world crime problems. This programme aims to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of this approach, including the use of scientific theories, methods and strategies for preventing crime. With a specific focus on safeguarding the public and upholding Hong Kong's reputation as one of the safest cities globally, this programme offers students the opportunity to contribute to societal progress through innovative approaches. The programme considers the prevention of many forms of both small-scale and transnational organised criminal activity – ranging from residential burglaries to cybercrime. It is ideally suited for practical-minded students with a passion for discovery and a commitment to utilizing scientific analytical methods to benefit society and promote social development. 

This is the only UGC-funded undergraduate programme in Hong Kong to provide comprehensive training in the discipline of Crime Science.

Upon successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:        

• describe a range of key concepts, theories and professional values in Crime Science and understand how it differs from traditional criminology;
• identify and critique the underlying assumptions of and devise interventions against criminal issues with a particular interest in different types of informal and formal problem-solving strategies in society;
• apply qualitative and quantitative research methods and use different scientific perspectives for explaining crimes in society;

Housed in the landmark Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre, the Department of Media and Communication offers innovative academic programmes that focus on media convergence. Unlike traditional curricula that segregate different modes of mass communication, we aim to train professional communicators capable of working in an environment of media convergence and information integration – an environment that spans journalism, broadcasting and TV, advertising, public relations and new media. Students can choose between two streams: 1) Language and Literature, or 2) English and Professional Communication. The programme structure consists of programme core courses (required by both streams), core courses for each stream and electives.

Through the programme core subjects, students are introduced to a range of topics and academic areas including applied linguistics, literary studies, professional communication, discourse analysis, language and digital media, cultural studies and creative writing. The stream core subjects provide a more specific engagement with relevant skills and topics while the elective courses allow students to strengthen and develop their areas of interest.

All students will choose to do either a Research Final Year Project or a Professional English Final Year Project as the capstone experience of their university education.

The programme adopts a global perspective on English and emphasises the importance of intercultural knowledge, effective communication, and critical thinking. Students are encouraged to take part in at least one overseas learning experience (e.g. English language immersion, student exchange or overseas internship) to improve their global awareness and enhance their English communication skills within diverse settings.

The programme provides students with hands-on workplace experience of using English and communication skills in real-world corporate and creative settings. The internship course is compulsory for all students and is designed to provide students with a chance to apply the theories and skills they have learnt in the classroom to real-world workplace situations. CityUHK Scholarships for Hong Kong Talents
CityUHK Talents Programme

This major is the first and only program in Hong Kong to focus on the increasingly important Asian region in this Asian age.

It strengthens students’ international perspectives.

Four-year degree students enrolled at the City University of Hong Kong have a chance to apply for admission to the Joint Bachelor’s Degree Program between City University of Hong Kong and Columbia University during their second year.  Students admitted to the Joint Program will earn two bachelor degrees, awarded by the two universities.

It is staffed by scholars conducting field-based research in Asian countries and provides students with up-to-date and in-depth regional knowledge.

It features opportunities for students to join overseas exchange programs and field trips to different countries in and beyond Asia to broaden their horizons.

PIA’s internship program offers on-site job training in a number of fields, such as non-government organizations, marketing and research firms, private companies, media sectors, political parties and policy consultancy agencies.

The Department of Public and International Affairs is a multidisciplinary department with a multinational faculty and a strong international orientation. With faculty members graduating from many of the world’s top universities and with a commitment to leading edge research and high quality teaching, the Department can lay a strong claim to be the leading department in its field in the region.

This major explores Asia’s significance in contemporary world politics and Hong Kong’s strategic positions within China, Asia and the world. It aims to develop students’ knowledge of the socio-political, economic and cultural changes occurring in Asian countries and to situate them in the broader international context. Students will learn to contemplate Asia's increasingly significant roles in world affairs and examine these roles with both theoretical and practical analytical tools. Through its interdisciplinary curriculum and social research training, the major seeks to equip students with analytical skills that are of great value to organizations in different administrative and economic sectors throughout Hong Kong, Asia and beyond. In addition, it enhances students’ critical reasoning and problem-solving skills, and will deepen their regional and global perspectives.

This major aims to develop vital human resources that are of strategic importance to Hong Kong. It will develop your knowledge and skills, and broaden and deepen your international and regional perspectives to prepare you for a career in government, social and commercial sectors. Graduates are employable in a wide variety of occupational fields, including social research, market research, journalism and mass media, political groups, public relations, commerce, project-planning and management, social enterprises and non-government organizations.

Our graduates have obtained jobs in teaching positions at all levels, as well as jobs in the private sector, such as editors, non-governmental organization workers, journalists, public-relations personnel, researchers, management trainees, etc.

CityUHK Talents Programme

Starting in 2026/27, high school applicants can directly apply for Year 1 entry to the prestigious Joint Bachelor’s Degree Programme offered by CityUHK and Columbia University. Graduates will earn degrees from both institutions. For JUPAS applicants, a separate application to Columbia University is required after submitting the JUPAS application.

Pathway for Research, Innovation, and Multinational Engineering (PRIME) is the flagship Programme of the College of Engineering designed to provide exceptional students with a comprehensive education in engineering and opportunities to gain valuable experience through research internships and work placements in top universities and companies worldwide. It is intended to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in the field of engineering and to prepare them for successful careers in the global engineering industry. PRIME is open to talented and motivated students with a passion for engineering and a commitment to excellence.

Key features

Students accepted into the programme receive a range of benefits, including:

• Free Choice of Major: Students admitted to PRIME are free to choose any major within the College of Engineering upon accepting the offer. They will be enrolled in one of the departments before starting their first year of study. 
   
• One-on-One Mentorship: Each student will be paired with a faculty member who will provide personalised guidance and support throughout the programme. The faculty mentor will help the student identify their academic and professional goals, develop a plan to achieve them, and provide feedback and guidance along the way.
   

• Overseas Experience in Year 3 or Year 4

  a) Research Internship: Selected students will have the opportunity to work with leading researchers at top overseas universities. This will provide students with hands-on experience in cutting-edge research and will help them develop essential skills in data analysis, experimental design, and scientific communication.

  b) Global Work Placement: Selected students may also have the opportunity to undertake placements with international companies in leading engineering and technology destinations around the world. These experiences enable students to apply their engineering skills in real-world settings, build global professional networks, strengthen communication skills, and gain invaluable industry exposure.

• Interdisciplinary Final-year Project: Leveraging faculty members' diverse research expertise and state-of-the-art research facilities, students will receive support to conduct interdisciplinary research in their final-year projects, offering valuable experience for their future professional endeavours.
   
• Guaranteed admission to CityUHK PhD programme#: This opportunity provides a clear pathway for students interested in furthering their academic and research careers.

Other features

With the mission to foster the career development of students and promote impactful innovations, students of the College of Engineering will also benefit from the following optional schemes.

• Undergraduate plus Master's Degree Programmes: Students in an “Undergraduate plus Master's Degree Programme” will receive a conditional offer for a Master's degree programme when they join CityUHK as undergraduate students. They can benefit from advanced-level courses, such as those with research elements and normally taught at the Master's level, during their undergraduate study. On completion of their study at CityUHK, students will be awarded two degrees (Bachelor's degree + Master's degree).
   
• Entrepreneurial Training: The College offers a Minor in Engineering Entrepreneurship, which aims to provide entrepreneurial training to help students develop the skills and knowledge needed to start and operate their engineering businesses. It also helps students broaden their multi-disciplinary perspectives, integrating management, marketing, finance, and engineering.
   
• Global Challenges: CityUHK X Sino Grand Challenges Scholars Program (CityUHK X Sino GCSP) is a combined curricular and extracurricular element to prepare students to be the future engineers and scientists that address and solve the global challenges facing the world in this century. CityUHK X Sino GCSP would give students a sense of purpose and enable them to positively impact the world through their engineering work.
   
• Cross-Cultural Competence: Through Student Exchange Programmes, study tours and the Cultural & Language Immersion Scheme (CALIS), students are provided with opportunities to develop cross-cultural competence through activities such as language training, cultural immersion experiences, or international service projects. This would help students to become global citizens and to develop the skills needed to work effectively in diverse and multicultural environments.

Local students admitted to the Flagship Programmes with outstanding HKDSE/IB/GCE A-Level examination results shall be automatically considered for the Flagship Scholarships. The Flagship Scholarships include:

• Tuition and hall fees incurred at CityUHK and are tenable for the normal duration of the programmes concerned
  • Full Scholarship: 100% tuition and hall fees (double room occupancy) 
  • Half Scholarship: 50% tuition and hall fees (double room occupancy)
• Guaranteed berth in the Halls of Residence
• A one-off special sponsorship of a maximum amount of HK$500,000 for an overseas exchange of up to one year at a top-ranked university

Students admitted to PRIME are free to choose any of the following majors within the College of Engineering upon accepting the offer. 

Students will be enrolled in one of the departments before starting their first year of study. 

• For MSE and SYE, students will be enrolled in the major in Year 1. 
• For ACE, EE and MNE, students will be admitted to the department in Year 1 and enrolled in their pre-selected major in subsequent years.

Student Exchange Programme

Recognising the importance of nurturing students with a global perspective, the College encourages students to particpate in Student Exchange Programme. Students can study abroad at a partner university for a semester or a summer term. These international experiences not only broaden students’ horizons but also enhance their personal growth and career development. The College has an extensive network of exchange partners across the globe, including Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Columbia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Macau, mainland China, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, the Netherlands, the UK, and the US.

The College operates the Co-op Education Centre with a mission is to work with industry, local and overseas, to provide co-operative education for students. The Centre aims to nurture a new generation of engineering professionals and industrial leaders with a global outlook who are capable of meeting the challenges in this fast-changing world. CityUHK Scholarships for Hong Kong Talents

This is one of the CityUHK’s Flagship Programmes, which equip students with essential knowledge and skills, cultivate their global leadership abilities, and connect them with leading professionals. The Flagship Scholarships, which cover tuition and hall fees, a guaranteed berth, and a one-off exchange sponsorship of up to HK$500,000, will be awarded to local JUPAS talents who meet the criteria.
